Still my favorite piece of Belleek - Three Handle Loving Cup
Belleek Loving Cup
The Loving Cup Ceremony is an ancient tradition used by the Irish, Scottish, French and Jewish cultures. During the 15th century, it was very common for the Celts to toast each other with a ceremonial Loving Cup or wine cup. Traditionally, a bride and groom share their first drink together as wife and husband signifying the coming together of the two families.
In Scotland the cup is referred to as a Quaich, which comes from the Celtic word cuach, meaning cup. The traditional Quaich is shaped like a two-handed bowl and is often adorned by a Celtic design. The Loving Cup signifies the special moment in the ceremony when the couple toasts their love, commitment, devotion and friendship.
