Over a thousand years ago, the Vikings pillaged and raided Irish Churches and Monasteries for their gold and silver.

Accomplished craftsmen working in Temple Bar area of Dublin fashioned these precious metals into stunning rings, armlets and brooches, the most common brooch was a cloak fastener and is known as a Ring Pin.

Brian Boru drove the Vikings out of Ireland one thousand years ago though much of the Viking heritage remained. Many artifacts have been discovered during excavations at Wood Quay in Dublin.

Ancient Ogham

Ogham, pronounced "ohm" was used by the Ancient Irish Celts. This form of writing was used from about 600 BC to about 700 AD. The Ogham alphabet contains 20 letters made up of a vertical line with dots and dashes and is read starting from the bottom to the top.

While all surviving traces of Ogham are inscriptions on stone, it was probably inscribed on sticks, stakes and trees. Inscriptions generally take the form of somebody's name and the name of a place and were likely used to mark boundaries.

The existing examples of Ogham are on large standing stones. There are almost 400 known Ogham inscriptions in Ireland.

How to care for your wedding rings.

How you care for your Irish wedding rings will determine their longevity. All rings will collect dirt and grease and that will make them appear less brilliant. Here are some tips to ensure the continued beauty of your rings.

GOLD Wedding Rings

• Separate your gold jewelry in a compartmentalized jewelry box or keep them individually wrapped. This protects them from getting scratched

• Remove all jewelry before showering or house cleaning. Soap can cause a film to form on your gold rings, making them appear dingy and dull. By preventing the formation of this film, you reduce the occasions your rings will need to be cleaned.

• To clean your rings at home, you'll find many commercial cleaners available. In addition, you will find a soft chamois cloth an effective and inexpensive way to keep your wedding rings lustrous and shining.

• Remove tarnish with a prepared jewelry cleaner or by using soap and water mixed with a few drops of ammonia.

• Brush with a soft bristle brush. An old soft toothbrush will work well. After the soaping, simply rinse with lukewarm water and allow to dry.

• Grease can be removed from gold rings by dipping the jewelry into plain rubbing alcohol.

Sterling silver will oxidize with time. Properly cared for silver improves with age and develops a patina.

SILVER Wedding Rings

• Do clean with a mild soap and water solution, allow water to bead up, and pat dry with a soft cloth. For stubborn dirt, a jewelry cleaner labeled for silver use is ok to use.

• Store your silver in a cool, dry place, preferably in a tarnish preventative bag or wrapped in a soft piece of felt or cloth.

• Store your silver individually so that they don't collide together and scratch.

• Don't rub silver with anything other than a polishing cloth or fine piece of felt.

• Don't expose to air and light when storing because it will cause silver to tarnish.

• Don't wear sterling silver in pools or hot tubs or other chlorinated water.

General Tips:

• Remove jewelry when applying makeup and face powder, perfumes, colognes or other lotions. Wash your hands before putting your rings back on.

• Wash hands after applying perfume, makeup and powder and before putting on jewelry. Keep your jewelry in a dry place.

• Don't wear your jewelry in pools or hot tubs.

• Don't wear your jewelry doing rough work.

It's March and we’ll be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. My mind turns to thoughts of the enchanted green isle full of misty glens, fields of shamrock, rugged cliffs and towering castles. St Patrick’s Day is magical and I thought it might be fun to share a few facts about St Patrick and just how it came to be that we celebrate a holiday in his honor.

So who was St Patrick?

There are many legends associated with Saint Patrick. It is said that he drove all the venomous snakes out of

Ireland

and into the sea where they drowned. This has now become fact even though no one knows if it’s actually true. It is speculated this is a metaphor for converting all the pagans to Christianity because the pagan symbol was the snake.

St. Patrick was born in the latter half of the fourth century to a wealthy family in

England

; his father was a Roman in the British army. His given name was Maewyn but he went by the name Patricius, which was later changed to Patrick. He became the Patron Saint of Ireland because of all the work he did there as a missionary in the fifth century. Sadly most of the facts about his life remain a mystery, but I will share a little of what we do know of his life and the legends associated with him.

A Bit about Metals (For your Wedding Rings)

Platinum, gold and silver, are the most common metals used in the making of fine jewelry. Each of these metals is malleable, which means they can easily be formed into other shapes. This makes them absolutely perfect, for creating beautiful jewelry. All three metals have a high luster -- and provide a dazzling and durable base, for any type of fine jewelry.

Silver

Pure silver - also known as fine silver - is very soft and malleable. Because of this, it is easily damaged. When using silver for jewelry making purposes, it is most often combined with harder metals, to make it more durable. This combination is referred to as -- sterling silver.

Sterling Silver consists of 92.5% silver and 7.5% of another metal, which is usually copper. After much experimentation, it has been shown that copper has no affect on silver’s natural color and is the best compliment, in terms hardness. Sterling silver is usually stamped with; 925 or sterling.

Silver is the least expensive of the three precious metals. It is much more abundant than gold and platinum, so the price of the piece is largely determined by the craftsmanship and labor involved in its creation.

You do need to clean you silver jewelry regularly, to prevent tarnish build-up. Silver becomes tarnished when it reacts with the sulfur or hydrogen sulfide in the air. There are special cleaners, clothes and tarnish prevention methods available to help you care for your silver items.

Gold

Gold is the most malleable and ductile metal; it does not tarnish, rust, or corrode. With its warm golden color, and dazzling brilliance, gold has been the metal of choice for some of the world’s most precious gems. It is also a wonderful conductor, so it has served some very practical purposes as well. Gold, is of course yellow, in its natural state, but it can combine with other metals to produce other colors such as; white gold, rose/pink gold, and even green gold!

Karats

Pure gold is very soft and needs to be alloyed with other metals to make is harder, and strong enough, to be used for jewelry purposes. Some of the most common metals used are silver, copper, zinc, and palladium. The karat system was designed to let people know how pure the gold piece is.

24k - 100% pure gold
22k - 91.7% pure gold
18k - 75% pure gold
14k - 58.3% pure gold
12k - 50% pure gold
10k – 41.7% pure gold (this is the legal limit for something to be considered real gold in the U.S.)

Adding more alloys to gold makes it harder, so the 10k gold will be much harder than the 18k gold but the 18k gold will be richer in color, because it contains more pure gold.

Yellow

Yellow gold is most often alloyed with copper and silver. This makes it harder and more durable. As described above, the higher the pure gold content, the deeper the color. The warm color of yellow gold makes it a perfect choice for any stone.

White

Since gold is yellow in its natural state - in order to make white gold - white alloys need to be added to it. To do this gold is usually combined with palladium, zinc and copper. Because of these alloys, it is also harder than yellow gold. White gold is often rhodium plated to give it a bright-white finish.

White gold is an excellent metal choice, for showcasing the shimmering brilliance, of a fine quality diamond.

Platinum

Platinum, with its cool white sheen, is the most durable - and considered the most precious - of the three metals. It is very strong it will not change shape or wear away like gold and silver do. Platinum is 95% pure, so it is an ideal choice for people with metal allergies. Platinum is commonly alloyed with iridium, palladium, or ruthenium.
Platinum is the most expensive of the three, because of its purity and rarity. It is about 30 times rarer than pure gold! Because of Platinum’s durability, you can be sure that stones will be held securely, and that it will make a high-quality piece of jewelry, which will be enjoyed -- for generations to come.

The Irish people have long considered the horseshoe a symbol of good luck. In the upright position it gathers all the good luck in the air. To insure no luck will fall out, it must never be tipped downward.

For centuries Irish brides have tied a horseshoe to their leg on their wedding day. So long as it stayed upright the couple would be rewarded with nothing but good luck. The bride dare not take it off till the end of the day, or until couple had been happily married for several hours. If the horseshoe did tip into the downward position the Irish believed it meant nothing but bad luck.

This tradition is still upheld today, although the actual horseshoe is represented by a smaller piece of jewelry. Miniature porcelain horseshoes are worn or the horseshoe is simply a charm on a necklace or bracelet. But beware…..It must be facing up!

I came across some really cute items for your favorite dog. I wish one of my dogs was a girl cause the pink and brown Celtic Love Knot collar and leash are just adorable! But my little angels are dogs. The leashes and collars are made in the USA and come in two patterns the Celtic Thorn (boyish) black and gray and the very pretty Celtic Love Knot (girlish) pink and brown.

The patterns also come in a travel water bowl which I find comes in very handy at the dog park or after we’ve been hiking. You can also get a treat bag in the black thorn pattern.

The Celtic Warrior collection was inspired by the Ardagh Chalice which can currently be seen in the National History Museum of Ireland in Dublin. The Ardagh Chalice, as well as the Book of Kells, is internationally recognized as a priceless antiquity and a treasure of the people of Ireland.
The Ardagh Chalice is from the early Christian Period and is believed to have been made in the late 8^th to early 9^th Century.
In 1868 the Chalice was found in Ardagh county, Limerick by two men digging potatoes. The Chalice is made of silver and is decorated with 354 pieces of gold, brass, led, pewter, copper, gilt, bronze and enamel beading. There are great examples of fine filigree gold work on this piece which show the extraordinary skilled craftsmanship and time that was devoted to making the chalice.

What is your story? How did you meet?

My baby brother just turned the big 40 last week and my sisters and I went to Atlanta to visit him. We had a great time! While we were there we visited The World of Coca Cola and it was awesome. One of the exhibits was “What is your story” of course it was to be a fond memory or a story about coke. One of the stories I read went like this.

I went to a party that did not serve coke. Me and this girl wanted coke so we went to the store together and we didn’t go back. We got married.

So it got me to thinking that there must be a lot of great stories out there on how you met your sweetheart.

Here is my story. Back in the mid 1990’s I got laid off from my job but I got another job right away so that was ok. I had to move my 401K money so I went to be the bank that my BFF Robin suggested I go to. The lady at the bank told me I had to meet with the Financial Advisor and I really didn’t want to but he called several times and I really tried to cancel the appointment because I was so busy with my new job but he wouldn’t let me. He said I’ll sit here and wait. Ugh I was so tired from my long day but I stuck some rolls in my pocket and went to the appointment and that is when I met my hubby.

Traditionally the "Quaich", which originated in the Scottish Highlands, was used both for a "Cup of Welcome" and also when offering a farewell drink.

The word Quaich is from the Gaelic word “cauch” which means “shallow cup”. The Quaich was originally made from the primitive "staved" wood and later from horn or leather; eventually pewter and silver became popular as it became the favorite drinking cup throughout Scotland. The distinctive design has remained the same over the centuries - a shallow drinking bowl with 2 handles, known as "lugs".

In modern times in Scotland the Quaich is used for sharing the whisky known as the water of life at wedding celebrations. The tradition is for the bride to fill the Wedding cup and pass it around all the guests in celebration of marriage.

I came across and article on eHow the other day discussing How to find “Trinity Knot Celtic Wedding Rings”. But what they described and pictures weren’t Trinity Knots they were of Celtic Knots. All Trinity Knots are Celtic Knots but not all Celtic Knots are Trinity Knots.

A Trinity Knot always has three points and taken from the word Triquetra meaning three (tri) and quetrus (cornered). The Trinity Knot is notably found in the Book of Kells.

The Trinity Knot or Triquertra symbol is used by Christians as a symbol of the Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit). A contemporary Irish meaning of the Trinity Knot is love never ending because a Trinity Knot has no end.

Planning your wedding is an exciting and challenging time in your life. No doubt you will need to employ many personal skills and probably learn a few new ones.

Incorporating your heritage into your wedding theme can be very interesting & lots of fun and sometimes even a little over the top. However there are lots of little touches you can use to follow family traditions and these make an otherwise ordinary wedding into something a little more meaningful, and very special.

Here a few ideas that follow some popular Irish Wedding Traditions that will add Celtic pride to your day. Have a harpist or bagpiper play during the ceremony or cocktail hour. Display a Celtic Unity Candle Holder with plain or personalized Claddagh candles on your altar. Your favors can have a touch of Irish or Celtic flair, examples being as simple as a packet of Shamrock seeds, Celtic Knot wine stoppers, or Claddagh shaped chocolates.

Celtic or Claddagh Bridal jewelry for the bride and bridesmaids will add a nice touch your wedding day photos. Or incorporate your family tartan in the color scheme dress ribbons for the ladies and cummerbund for the gents.

Not long ago I was out with the girls and one of my girl friends was laughing at the fact that her brother in law was in a club that was for toastmasters. She didn’t know that such a group existed and at first didn't even beleive him. But why would she; she never had to give a toast. I would imagine if you are not comfortable giving speeches giving the toast would be pretty stressful.

The Last Minute Groom

It amuses me the difference between ladies and gents. We often get calls for last minute rings. And today I got two one from a woman who said “I know it is short notice but I am getting married in two months …..” and the other from a man who said “I didn’t get my ring yet and I’m getting married this Saturday can you help me?.” Lucky for the lady that is plenty of time to get a ring our not so lucky gent is going to have a little pre-wedding stress.

Most of the wedding rings we sell are custom handmade to order and can take anywhere from two to four weeks. I find it odd that many couples (not all) but quite a few don’t leave that much time to select wedding rings. I’ve done a little research and most of the To do List suggest selecting your rings 4 to 6 months before the wedding and some suggest 12 months or more before the wedding.

Do you really need that much time? Probably not but you are going to be wearing this ring for the rest of your life and it should be something you really love.

In closing don’t feel bad for our groom we do keep a fair amount of rings in stock just for this reason. We had four rings in stock in his size and he picked out a very nice Celtic Knot Wedding ring. He’s all set he said…

What metal should you choose for your Irish Wedding Ring

Well you have plenty of choices for your Irish wedding ring not just in style but in metal as well.

Silver is a very soft white metal that can be used as a wedding ring. Silver is a little more difficult to maintain. Silver will tarnish over time and is not as durable as the other metals so it may tend to scratch. Silver is the least expensive of the metals so it is a great choice for the budget conscious couple.

Gold is the most popular of the metals for Wedding Rings because of gold’s durability and incredibly long lasting value. Gold resists tarnish and is pleasing to the eye. Gold is available in colors the most popular is yellow and white though rose gold has gained popularity in recent years. The different colors of gold depend on which other metals the gold is mixed with.

To be considered solid gold, your ring must be at least 10K or marked 417 indicating 41.7% gold, 14K is marked 585 for 58.5% gold, 18K or marked 750 indicating 75% gold. Color varies with 18K being the brightest.

The name 'Claddagh' was the name of a small fishing village in County Galway, West Ireland where a man named Richard Joyce was kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery in North Africa. Joyce was trained as a goldsmith and created the Claddagh as the symbol of his beloved village. Once released, Joyce (and the Claddagh) returned to Galway as a master goldsmith.

As popular as ever, Claddagh rings are still worn as a symbol of friendship, engagement or wedding rings.

Tradition says they are to be worn as follows:

Friendship - the ring is worn anywhere on the right hand.
Engagement - the ring is worn on third finger of your left hand with the tip of the heart pointing outwards.
